As the pandemic restricts my child and more like him from experiencing school life, good vocabulary and concept based learning helps him more than online school
As a parent, I have been fiercely against the use of screen time for children. When I had Prithvi, my 4-year-old son, I chose to not use videos beyond 15 minutes. No doubt, it was difficult as we are a nuclear couple . Our focus was on making him interactive and not dependant on screens alone.
But with the Covid 19 Pandemic, the world has turned upside down. Prithvi has had no school beyond a tinny voice calling out to kids through a poor Internet connection. The ‘learning’ bit in online schooling for nursery and preparatory kids amounts to very limited knowledge. It doesn’t focus on conceptual development. So I have had to use screen time to develop his learning curve, and also to bring in a spirit of play while he learns. Youtube kids networks are often used by parents as a way of tackling the child while they are busy with tasks. I pick only one network, Super Simple Songs.

Correct Vocabulary and Grammar Bring Good Language Skills
While I don’t mean to pull down any youtube channels, my experiences of exploring platforms from India have left me disappointed. Be it the colors, animation, aesthetic or music, something always jars. But the most obvious drop in quality is the quality of language used in these videos! Sometimes grammatical errors play out as part of a nursery rhyme.
Listening to incorrect grammar and language at such an early age will train a child incorrectly. I stick to Super Simple Songs, as it has impeccable grammar and linguistic play, along with interplay of age-old classic rhymes. In fact, Super Simple Songs and Mother Goose Club are used as training videos by schools in Australian Outbacks, where some children get to go to school only once a week. Perhaps it’s also the visual consonance of these videos that encourage school systems abroad to count on them; it makes the process of viewing and learning productive for children.

Folksy Fun Blends With Beautiful Visuals
It might not be long, in this AI and Big Data driven world, that we lose certain beautiful, easy to listen, and fun rhymes forever. Rhymes are the first steps towards poetry so they work as audio tools to train a mind in poetic technique early on. I find the fact that classic rhymes that were lost to children in text books for quite a few decades, still play out here with soothing visuals. Over time I have found Prithvi humming and singing these rhymes in perfect tune by himself; listening to him do that fills me with joy. And this happened on it’s own, all by himself.

It’s a tragedy that children have to stay locked down and can’t go to school. At this stage, meeting other kids physically is the best learning that they can get. Yet that is not happening for them at all. Instead of letting this lag (of school environments and social interactions) impact Prithvi, who is a quiet, introspective child, I actively work towards giving him an education that entertains and engages his mind. Good quality videos go a long way in doing that, and thank god that someone thought about creating Super Simple Songs way before a pandemic took place!
