Here’s Why Super Simple Songs is my GO TO Youtube Channel for Kids

As the pandemic restricts my child and more like him from experiencing school life, good vocabulary and concept based learning helps him more than online school

As a parent, I have been fiercely against the use of screen time for children. When I had Prithvi, my 4-year-old son, I chose to not use videos beyond 15 minutes. No doubt, it was difficult as we are a nuclear couple . Our focus was on making him interactive and not dependant on screens alone.

But with the Covid 19 Pandemic, the world has turned upside down. Prithvi has had no school beyond a tinny voice calling out to kids through a poor Internet connection. The ‘learning’ bit in online schooling for nursery and preparatory kids amounts to very limited knowledge. It doesn’t focus on conceptual development. So I have had to use screen time to develop his learning curve, and also to bring in a spirit of play while he learns. Youtube kids networks are often used by parents as a way of tackling the child while they are busy with tasks. I pick only one network, Super Simple Songs.

Quality Video and Audio Production Makes for Easy Viewing

Super Simple Songs began in Tokyo, Japan’s capital and a hub for creative hotspots since over a decade. When a group of pre schoolteachers felt that basic learning tools online didn’t suffice for them to teach, they built their own with just five initial videos. And their first efforts reflect the channel’s spirit- the videos are beautiful!

The teaching effort and visual imagery that comes into use is vibrant and happy in spirit. As it looks pretty it gets the attention of a child; sung in soft, gentle tones, it gets a child hooked on to it’s sound. The message a video imparts with these easy on the senses elements in place, therefore, works effectively. Being a media professional for over a decade, I personally believe that if you expose young minds to good quality content, they will aspire to be part of such stories in future. For instance, Super Simple Songs features children of all skin colors and with physical differences as characters. That leads to an inclusive thought process.

Correct Vocabulary and Grammar Bring Good Language Skills

While I don’t mean to pull down any youtube channels, my experiences of exploring platforms from India have left me disappointed. Be it the colors, animation, aesthetic or music, something always jars. But the most obvious drop in quality is the quality of language used in these videos! Sometimes grammatical errors play out as part of a nursery rhyme.

Listening to incorrect grammar and language at such an early age will train a child incorrectly. I stick to Super Simple Songs, as it has impeccable grammar and linguistic play, along with interplay of age-old classic rhymes. In fact, Super Simple Songs and Mother Goose Club are used as training videos by schools in Australian Outbacks, where some children get to go to school only once a week. Perhaps it’s also the visual consonance of these videos that encourage school systems abroad to count on them; it makes the process of viewing and learning productive for children.

Folksy Fun Blends With Beautiful Visuals

It might not be long, in this AI and Big Data driven world, that we lose certain beautiful, easy to listen, and fun rhymes forever. Rhymes are the first steps towards poetry so they work as audio tools to train a mind in poetic technique early on. I find the fact that classic rhymes that were lost to children in text books for quite a few decades, still play out here with soothing visuals. Over time I have found Prithvi humming and singing these rhymes in perfect tune by himself; listening to him do that fills me with joy. And this happened on it’s own, all by himself.

It’s a tragedy that children have to stay locked down and can’t go to school. At this stage, meeting other kids physically is the best learning that they can get. Yet that is not happening for them at all. Instead of letting this lag (of school environments and social interactions) impact Prithvi, who is a quiet, introspective child, I actively work towards giving him an education that entertains and engages his mind. Good quality videos go a long way in doing that, and thank god that someone thought about creating Super Simple Songs way before a pandemic took place!

Why general angst against JNU students worries me

As always, it’s been a while since I wrote a blog. I am scrapping out a few minutes this morning to put this out, for I believe it’s important. Tons have been spoken and debated around the JNU students (or non students from outside) and their sloganeering. For a natural born cynic with little faith in politicians of any colour and a complete, holistic disconnect from anyone who dabbles in politics, I steer clear of the wrong and right. However, what has concerned me, are the underlying colours of extreme Right wing beliefs and values that have popped up online, on social media, and in multiple urbane conversation circles. To my rather visual imaginative mind, its like spotting neon coloured saffron underwear beneath a sheen of 'education', sophistication and prestigious Engineering/MBA degrees, which leaves a rather unappetising taste in your mouth. While in our free country, and that’s why, messy, chaotic, absolutely beautiful country, what you wear under your pants is ...

The Oscar Joke- Incredibly uncredible!

I often contemplate writing about the randomness about the much applauded Academy awards. Actually, this year, since Mallika Sherawat walked in with the caterers & Abhi- Ash also made it to the exalted red carpet, I kinda gave up. Ash might have been able to ace a couple of passes thanks to an anti ageing cream, but Mallika's only certifiable qualification has to be her weighty chest size. Yet, some Oscar decisions baffle me. Critics, film reviewers & movie buffs end up debating Why a Film Won. But I would rather point out to some spiffy reasons about why some films/ film folk very obviously Didnt win. Instance number 1: Tom Cruise. A rewatch of ' A few Good Men' made me rewind the clock to 1992. The spirited performance about a yuppie lawyer's sudden passionate turn for 'honor' simply didnt make it to the Best Actor nomination list. But that's probably because Cruise was taking on some doyens of acting who had been given a miss long enough! Not...
